Red River Hogs

While you can get close to Africa's top predators including lions, laughing hyenas, and zebras throughout the Zoo, appreciate a wide variety of African's less meat-focused wildlife on the southern grounds of the Zoo in African Oasis.

Red river hogs are the first creatures to grab your attention entering into the area. Weighing in at over 100 pounds, these wild swine from western Africa are the most colorful of the world's wild pigs.


Crested porcupines

Nearby, the sounds of African gray parrots fill the air. These small parrots can live between 50 and 80 years.

Across the path, kneel down to look through the glass at crested porcupines. Contrary to popular myth, porcupines do not shoot their quills. They must make physical contact.

Further on , you'll see an assortment of antelope. A herd of impalas sip at the pool while the rare dorcas gazelles graze. Along the hill line, greater kudus stare out at you from the trees.

Behind you leopard tortoises wander through grasses and rocks.
