Common Name: Binturong

Scientific Name: Arctictis binturong

Description: This member of the mongoose family is covered with a dark peppered long haired coat. Like the new world kinkajou, the binturong possesses a long tail with a prehensile tip. Motion appears cautious and deliberate.They communicate through a variety of vocalizations including a whine and various growls. The ears have tufts.

Range: From Nepal South into Indonesia.

Habitat: Deep forest.

Diet: Officially carnivorous. Birds, fish, and carrion. Has been reported to dive and swim to acquire fish. Diet includes fruit, tender shoots, and leaves, however.

Social Life: Usually seen alone or in small groups. Birth to a litter of 1 to 6 young after a 90 day gestation. Maturity is reached around two and a half years. Longevity is known in excess of twenty years.

Conservation: Although it appears nowhere in great numbers, it is not currently listed as threatened.
